Growing the NLM Historical Collections

Collection Development at NLM

The National Library of Medicine's Collection Development Program develops the Library's preeminent collection of the world’s literature in the history of medicine, overseeing the selection and acquisition of materials in all formats, including books, journals, manuscripts, prints and photographs, audiovisuals, websites, digital files and more.

NLM supports the growth and maintenance of the collection within the parameters established by the Library's Collection Development Guidelines.

Basing selections on a broad interpretation of medical thought and practice ensures that future generations will have a rich collection of material available to better understand the history of medicine and science.
