The National Library of Medicine (NLM) employs an authorized classification scheme called the NLM Classification. Designed for librarians who are creating or using a bibliographic record, this course will provide a basic overview of the NLM Classification, including how to apply Classification numbers, how to interpret NLM Call numbers, how to use the online NLM Classification system, and where to go for more information for specific issues.

This tutorial uses readings, interactive quizzes, and exercises to enable you to:

  • Describe the purpose of library classification.
  • Explain the differences between the Library of Congress Classification and the NLM Classification.
  • Explain the relationship between the NLM Classification and MeSH (Medical Subject Headings).
  • List the components of NLM Call Numbers.
  • Provide a general overview of the NLM Classification components.
  • Describe the NLM Classification number format.
  • Describe the process of selecting an appropriate NLM Classification number.
  • Explain how to use MeSH in applying NLM Classification.
  • Describe how to classify certain special materials using the NLM Classification.
  • Use the online NLM Classification to search schedules and index.
  • Identify online NLM Classification resources and where to go for more information.
