Dr. Kin Wah Fung has been named Director of the Lister Hill National Center for Biomedical Communications at the National Institutes of Health’s National Library of Medicine (NLM), effective July 28, 2024. Dr. Fung has been with NLM for over 20 years as a postdoctoral fellow and staff scientist. During that time, he has published high-impact research on COVID-19, long COVID, HIV/AIDS, adverse drug reactions, and other topics.

Dr. Fung is a recognized expert in biomedical terminologies and health data standards, for which he has served on national and international panels and advisory groups. He has developed several biomedical terminology products such as the SNOMED CT to ICD-10-CM Map, the CORE Problem List Subset, and RxTerms, which are heavily used by data scientists, software developers, and medical informatics researchers.

Dr. Fung is also a former physician and surgeon who has been honored with fellowships from the American College of Surgeons, the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine, and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Additionally, while working as a senior executive manager at the Hong Kong Hospital Authority, Dr. Fung helped in the strategic planning, design, and implementation of clinical information systems in 14 public hospitals serving over 5 million patients.

Dr. Fung earned his MD from the University of Hong Kong, his MS in Computer-Based Information Systems from the University of Sunderland, and his MA in Biomedical Informatics from Columbia University.
