Distinguished Investigator Eugene Koonin, PhD, Selected as International Society for Computational Biology Fellow
Eugene V. Koonin, PhD, Distinguished Investigator in the Computational Biology Branch of National Library of Medicine’s (NLM) Intramural Research Program (IRP), has been selected as a 2024 Fellow of the International Society for Computational Biology (ISCB). The announcement was made on March 8, 2024.
The ISCB Fellows program was created to honor members who have distinguished themselves through outstanding contributions to the fields of computational biology and bioinformatics. ICSB recognized Dr. Koonin for his innovative approaches to genome analysis that broaden evolutionary insights and enlighten biomedical and biotechnological research challenges.
Dr. Koonin has been an illustrious investigator at NLM for more than 30 years and is widely recognized in the field of evolutionary genomics. His research has illuminated the evolution of microbes and viruses including discovery of adaptive immunity in bacteria, the basis for the genome editing technology known as CRISPR. He is also member of the National Academy of Medicine, the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Society of Microbiology, European Molecular Biology Organization, and Academia Europea.
We are very proud of this recognition of Dr. Koonin’s contributions to the fields of computational biology and bioinformatics. His work is a crown jewel of NLM research, and I am delighted that he has been recognized for its innovation and impact,” said NLM Acting Director Steve Sherry, PhD. “Our investigators—including Dr. Koonin—drive many groundbreaking discoveries that accelerate biomedical research to improve the health of people around the world.”
