Childhood obesity predisposes people to type 2 diabetes later in life, which usually develops in adults age 40 and older. About 80 percent of adults with type 2 diabetes are overweight. Dr. Vargas-Rodriguez worries because she sees an epidemic of obesity among children and teens, particularly Latino youth, in the New York community of Washington Heights, in upper Manhattan.
